How locations & classifications work
Category colors use conservative headline-only rules, never image captions or excerpt background. Reported armed violence requires explicit attack or fighting language; warnings, possibilities, denials, questions, historical/legal stories and aftermath are excluded. Ambiguous reports remain general context. Open “Why this label?” beneath a headline to inspect its cue. Labels are not independently verified event types, event locations or severity ratings. A report has one primary topic. Locations are inferred from explicit place names and selected aliases in headlines and feed excerpts, using a worldwide city gazetteer and country directory. Clear headline city, state and province references take priority. Publisher excerpts can refine a state only to a compatible city; unrelated live-blog excerpts cannot override headline geography. Ambiguous names retain broader centers. City pins are approximate city centers, never exact incident coordinates. Country fallbacks use source-listed national capitals and are labeled as country references, not events in the capital. Seas and other non-country areas retain regional reference points. UN headquarters and deliberative-body reporting can use the New York headquarters reference; explicit field locations and other offices retain their geographic matching. Dashed outlines indicate country references; double outlines indicate states or provinces; solid outlines indicate city centers; cyan rings indicate institutional references. Publisher datelines and government statements alone do not establish city locations. City data: GeoNames (CC BY 4.0); state/province label points: Natural Earth (public domain).
